I grew up in a 1920's Spanish Colonial style apartment building in West Hollywood, built by a silent movie star. My family worked in Hollywood for four generations. As an L.A. native, I have lived in many different neighborhoods and experienced many different cultures, from surfer to punk, from glamour to street. Presently, I live in a cabin in Topanga Canyon.
"Mythos LA" is my love letter to this city. In this new series of paintings, figures mingle in the gardens of a semi-historic, slightly surreal Los Angeles. The stories are inspired by neighborhoods, and as in cinema, the eras can be fluid. The characters are invented, and the common set dressing is the non-native cacti and succulents, which have been transplanted, like most of LA's inhabitants.
In these brightly colored paintings, made of oil and acrylic, LA itself becomes the blank canvas upon which dreams are attempted, histories are mythologized, and culture is created.
